March 12th 2017 - No Gi Beginner

Theme & Techniques: Crucifix: Setup from Turtle, Armbar, Choke
Partner: Chris C

I requested crucifix since I've been working on it lately.  It's nice to get some different approaches from others.  Chris hadn't worked on the position before so I got to help him learn it a bit.

One thing that we worked on was recovering the crucifix if they rolled over while in the seat belt.  I think the key to this is staying a bit ahead and keeping a tight harness.

Rolling: Turtle Up/Down/Out, Free Rolling
Rolled With: A lot of people

Huge class today and we had the mats full while rolling.  Everyone was super tight defending against the crucifix. I did go for the back when they hide their arm.  I did attempt and fail at the recover after getting rolled over, might need to work on that.

Had some good rolls with Chris and Matt.  I told Matt afterward that he was driving forward too much in my guard, which wasn't helping him pass. So we talked about posture and breaking the guard open before passing.

Office Hours Partner: Matt, Conan, Henry, Mike

Rolled quite a few times with Conan and felt good about some of the things I did.  We got into an arm drag battle early on that I came out on top of.  I attacked some guillotines and N/S chokes. We both took turns starting from the bottom of side control.

I joined Henry and Mike who were training with strikes from guard.  I'm really getting the hint that I don't know the best thing to do in situations with striking. Some stuff that I do is fine but there are some bad habits that get me punched in the face. The best thing that happened was when I got Mike to turtle and setup a crucifix. I wasn't able to finish but it was cool.

I asked Mike about the finer points of kimura from half guard. He gave me some good tips about getting butterfly hook or knee shield first. If they start to move over my knees then I have to push my hips out from under them.  A lot of good stuff.

December 7th 2016 - Gi All Levels

Theme & Techniques: Grip Fighting: Standing, Guard, Back Mount
Partner: Jordan, Tom

It's great that we've had more than a couple people in Wednesday morning class lately.  I was starting to question if the class would stick around with the attendance being so low.

Since everyone was pretty experienced Jerad taught a class on grip breaks that he got some good feedback on before. It's one of those parts of BJJ that took a while to realize how important it is.

Rolling: Free Rolling
Rolled With: Jerad, Jordan, Morgan

Had to do some maneuvering a few times to get past Morgan's guard.  Close to the end of the round, I looked up and saw 20 seconds left and told him that he was down on points and needed a guard pass.

Office Hours Partner: Tom, Jerad

Rolled With Tom and he did a decent job from top half guard. It slowed me down quite a bit. We discussed inverted triangle and avoiding it.

I can't seem to get the upper hand on Jerad or if I do it's not for long.  I did feel like I frustrated him at times with some of my lapel guard attempts.  I have to come up with a different mindset when I roll with him and look for securing the little victories especially hand and grip fighting right from the start.  As I was getting changed I heard Jerad giving Tom advice on how to beat my half guard.  I told them to stop it.

November 27th 2016 - No Gi Beginner

Theme & Techniques: Chair Sit to Back Sequence
Partner: Chris C

Got in to work off some turkey along with 16 other guys. Biggest class I've attended in a while.

We worked on going to a chair sit when they turn away to turtle up from side control then a few defenses and contingencies.

Rolling: Up/Down/Out Side Control

Had some challenging rolls but did well.  I generally escaped with an underhook to half guard but didn't feel like I was able to come up to dog fight. From the top I attacked with N/S choke, kimura, and farside armbar.

Office Hours Partner: Henry, Tom, Mike

Had a good roll with Henry my goal was to defend against kimuras and guillotines and I did well for quite a while.  He was mostly on top of my half guard or scrambling.  I think I need to make an effort to focus on wrestling again because I was not winning those battles. I had a great deep half to waiter sweep but felt like once I got to the top I couldn't hold him down long enough to pass the guard may need to seek out some details about possible passes after the waiter.  He finally caught me with a kimura in the end.

Had a good time rolling with Tom.  We both thought our rolls have been going longer and longer as we're used to each other's techniques.  I was able to hit another waiter sweep in the process.

I asked Mike about the quarter guard spiral armbar position and he gave me a few options like going for an omoplata, one handed kimura, or doing a gift wrap to stretch them out.

July 17th 2016 - No Gi Beginner

Theme & Techniques: Bread Cutter, Darce
Partner: Henry

Conan demonstrated the no gi bread cutter on me for the class and it was miserable. I've done it a few times during rolling but find it difficult to set up. Since Henry and I were both pretty versed in these chokes we worked a bit on Japanese Necktie as well.

Rolling: Side Control
Rolled With: Henry, Daniel, Ben, Josh (New)

Henry did a great job today and I had a hell of a time trying to control him.  He was able to escape side control a few times with inverting so I had him show me that after class.

I helped out the new guy Josh as much as I could during rolling, I walked him through passing guard and some basic things that he should think about. But, I also swept him or passed his guard as cleanly as possible to which he commented that it didn't seem to take much effort.

Office Hours Partner: Henry

Henry and I rolled a few times making it quite a workout. He was on point with guillotines and was able to make them tight. I had a few submission attempts that were close but he was able to eventually slip out.

June 6th 2016 - Gi Advanced & Beginner

Quite an eventful day for my last day of bachelordom 2016.  I got Conan and Fuji interested in the Back Buddy Jr. I should probably get a referral bonus.  Then I think I startled everyone when I used my Marine voice at the end of advanced class and shouted at Derek, "ON YOUR FEET, MARINE!"  Not sure if Greg appreciated that but I think I surprised a couple people that perceive me as the soft spoken guy.

Advanced
Theme & Techniques: Omoplata Finishing triangling the legs under the arm or under the leg
Partner: Mark

Greg had us start the omoplata from shin on bicep guard.  One key thing that I forgot about setting up the omoplata from this guard is that both arms go to the side of the arm that you are going to do the technique on to control posture.  Then the techniques were in response to them basing out with either their far hand or leg and weaving the outside leg under them.  It kind of turned into the same pressure that I use when doing the crucifix omoplata. Great topic for me!

Rolling: Closed Guard KOTM, Free Rolling

I feel much better about my performance today than last Wednesday.  My back not being as tight was a huge improvement.  I played some cross guard of course and hit some omoplata sweeps and submissions.  One of the coolest things I hit was a barata plata.  I was trying to get the triangle and didn't feel like I could close my legs properly.  I set up the arm correctly and stepped over the head and it was right there.  I think I might use this as a goto for big guys that I get to triangle position in but have no chance of securing the legs.

Beginner
Theme & Techniques: Kesa Getami Leg Over Head to Armbar, Turtle Turnover to Side and Back Control
Partner: Angie

Felt bad for Angie as my gi was already damp with sweat.  She said she didn't mind.  I'll probably save my tips on the techniques of the week for Wednesday's post.  This was the first time I worked with Angie and besides a few pointers seemed like she knew the techniques pretty well.

Rolling: Turtle
Rolled With: Angie, John

Angie did pretty well from the top position with giving pressure on my hips and searching for the grips.  I surprised her a few times with the granby.  John was all over me from the top threatening the back.  We had some good exchanges where I really had to scramble to keep him from taking my back.

Office Hours: Brian M.

Brian asked me to go over the hip switch guard pass again since we touched on it Friday morning.  I showed him the basics of the position and then went off on all of the possibilities that I like to go into from there.  Kimura to submit or to help with the pass, Push on the knee and Back Step, Go to Quarter Guard, Back to Knee Slide, or attempt EZKill Choke, etc.  I could see that it was getting to be too much.  So I told him to just keep it simple and get to the position for now and then work to get his foot free.  The other stuff will come with time.

June 5th 2016 - No Gi Beginner

Theme & Techniques: Transition to mount from knee on belly & Twister Side Control, Arm Triangle
Partner: Bhuvana

My bachelor week is approaching the end with only tomorrow remaining. It will be nice to resume my normal schedule and hopefully return to 100%.

Good information from Conan today as I know the subject of transitioning into mount isn't covered that often.  He taught the arm triangle using the new crossface way that Greg has been teaching recently.

Rolling: Side Control KOTM, Free Rolling
Rolled With: Bhuvana, Adam, Andy, Jesus, Bauer, maybe others

Bottom person was king. Had a couple of tough rolls with Bauer especially from both top and bottom.  I was able to avoid the wrath of Adam's butcher in his jellybean rash guard and fire spats.  I setup a few north/south chokes today as my primary no gi goto submission.  Finished class with some good free rolls with Bhuvana and Andy.

Office Hours Partner: Fuji

Tried my best to keep Fuji off the top and succeeded the first roll. There was one point when I was transitioning from back mount to turtle, back to back mount until I finally fell off. Then my guard was passed and he went for north/south choke.

June 2nd 2016 - Gi Beginner & No Gi Advanced

Gi Beginner
Theme & Techniques: O-Soto Gari, Half Guard Knee Slide Pass, Turtle Granby Roll
Partner: Henry

Gonna make this a quick one. Had a good time working the techniques with Henry. After the guard pass we transitioned into either the quickest or the coolest submissions we could think of.

Rolling: Half Guard, Turtle
Rolled With: Henry, Wes

During my roll with Henry I move to a double leg and when I pushed with my head my upper back got super tight. So I dealt with that the rest of the night.

Did turtle with Wes who I hadn't met before, apparently he switched places with Ross. Seems like a friendly guy.  He did a pretty good job from the top of turtle with messing with collar grips.

No Gi Advanced
Theme & Techniques: Guillotines from Headlock position and Closed Guard
Partner: Mark

Got to work with our visitor Mark and I think he had a pretty good time with the class. After class he said he was impressed with Mike and Jerad.

I had worked on the first technique a couple of weeks ago so I was familiar with it. I felt great about getting into position with my shin.

The second was new to me. We got an underhook and off to the side. If they grab the bicep we bring the arm over to hand it off to the overhooked hand. From there we release the guard and sit up into the guillotine. I like it.

Rolling: Closed Guard KOTM, Free Rolling
Rolled With: Quite a few people

Rolling is a bit of a blur. Just trying not to injure myself further and take it easy. I did some good things and got passed and swept a few times.  Had some good rolls with Jerad, Charles, and Cat.

March 13th 2016 - No Gi All Beginner (Back in Town)

Theme & Techniques: Triangle from Closed Guard
Partner: Mo, Clint

I'm back after a week of vacation sans any training, so I was really jonsing for a BJJ fix. It is good to take a break every now and again to recharge the batteries and let some minor things heal. The one training I did benefit from was playing twister with my wife and kids. I actually got sore from holding a few crazy positions.

Jerad taught some basic triangle setups and I started working with Clint who was on his first day. We were of similar build so he had some trouble at first completing it just like I did with my stubby legs. But, I was able to give him some pointers that made a difference in the end.

Rolling: Closed Guard (4 x 2 min)
Rolled With: Clint, Shane

Clint had some wrestling and football but wasn't really familiar with closed guard. I tried to give him some active instruction by putting him close to being swept or close to having his guard passed and then talking him through how to recover.

Shane did a good job hand fighting making it tough for me to do what I wanted. I focused on trying to get 2 on 1 from the bottom and I had some success with it. To pass I attempted the double under guard break that Tinguinha showed us a long time ago.

Office Hours Partner: Shane, Gregory, Jerad

Shane said he hadn't seen the guard break before and also wanted to go over how to defend the double under pass. Seemed like he found both things useful.

I rolled with Gregory for the first time I think and he seemed to appreciate me going light with him.  We discussed the turtle turnover and also some of the double under pass defenses.  He's a good guy.

I saved up some energy to roll with Jerad and felt pretty good about my performance. I need to find a way around his ability to stop my deep half. We talked about a few half guard techniques and passing in no gi.

December 20th 2015 - No Gi Beginner

Theme & Techniques: Single Leg, Mounted Armbar, Bicep Slicer
Partner: Darijo

Went to class today since I missed open mat yesterday. Still didn't get enough rolling though. We worked on setting up the armbar by getting the opponent to lift their elbow then moving into S mount.

I don't have too much experience with slicers mostly because they're usually not allowed in gi, so it was nice to get some reps of them.

Rolling: Mount (4 x 4 min)
Rolled With: Darijo, Shane

Mount escapes felt solid. I feel like I have a lot of options for escaping and even ending up with a deep half sweep in the process.  From the top I seem to cycle through americana, no gi Ezekiel, to guillotine and then mounted triangle. I still don't feel strong with my attacking but I do feel good about maintaining the position.  I gave Shane some pointers on technical mount and some deep half.

Office Hours Partner: Tate

Was glad Tate stuck around for a little bit. We had a good roll. I find it difficult to get to a good position on him as he always finds a way to squirm out.  He caught me with a calf cutter from the truck and I found myself without a defensive answer for it. I did some good things as well with an omoplata sweep and a toe hold attack that I need to improve.

October 27th 2015 - Gi Beginners

Theme & Techniques: O-Goshi, Armbar from Guard, Cross Collar Choke
Students: Jerad, Abdul

A rare occurrence of Jerad in noon class and until Abdul showed up, I thought we were going to be the only 2.  Very odd as last week we had quite a few students in class.  Unfortunately my knee is still a little tight.  I demonstrated the techniques and did fine with that, but didn't want to chance messing it up rolling.  I'm hoping to be back Friday morning though.  It was a little odd being the instructor while Jerad was the student, but I just went with it.

Some tips on today's techniques:
  • When doing any of the hip type throws I like to think of focusing on getting under their belt knot.  So if a person is much shorter than you, you have to get your hips lower than someone who is taller.
  • For Armbar from Guard it seems like the people have the hardest time rotating their body.  I had 2 things that I think about to deal with this.  One is the bend in their knees.  If they are sitting back on their heals they are harder to armbar or sweep.  When turning you kick them in the armpit to drive them forward.
  • The other point I make is that I try to make it as easy as possible to kick my leg over their head.  If it's difficult to get around their head I need to turn more and I'm not at the correct angle.
  • For the collar choke the biggest thing that helped me get it right was keeping my wrist as straight as possible after getting the deep grip.  If you bend your wrist backward it might feel strong but you are actually conforming to their neck instead of shoving your forearm into it.
Rolling: Guard Position (4 x 2 min)

I came close to deciding to roll but decided against it.  I did my best to coach Abdul through rolling but it was kind of difficult.  It was a lot of basics and common problems that beginners do.  Leaning forward too much in guard, crossing the center line with his hands, trying to submit in the closed guard, etc.  I tried not to harp on things over and over and Jerad took it easy on him.  He did do some good thing and started to almost pass his guard at one point.

October 20th 2015 - Gi Beginner

Theme & Techniques: Shoulder Throw RNC Defense, Farside Armbar, Scissor Sweep from Guard
Partner: Anthony

Almost forgot to write this. Took a week of vacation to use up some days and I'm getting lazy I guess.

This week's techniques are some of my high percentage ones. I'm pretty decent at scissor sweep and often get farside armbar from knee on belly. Some pointers that I use:

  • For the shoulder throw getting them on your hips is a big part of the battle. There was a recent video with Rickson where he described using a sitting back on a couch motion to help load them up, I like the analogy.
  • For Farside Armbar, I like to emphasise a tight knee squeeze. As soon as I rotate I'm squeezing enough that even if I don't use my arms they couldn't get free.
  • For Scissor Sweep, I think of it like a Judo throw. I pull them forward and load them up on top of me and then do the kick.

Rolling: Side Control (2 x 2 min), Guard (4 x 2 min)
Rolled With: Anthony, Jason, Brian

Had some success with attempting the techniques during rolling.  For the armbar I think I need to focus on securing the arm to my head during the transition.  That's where some can escape by jerking their arm out at the right time.

I rolled with Jason on his first day and tried my best at giving him a crash course on positions.  It's very interesting to roll with someone on their first day.

October 18th 2015 - No Gi Beginner

Theme & Techniques: Darce, Japanese Necktie
Partner: Conan

Conan added some movement exercises to the warmup. We did armbar from mount and guard and hip bump sweep.

We did the Darce from half guard and for a few of the students it was their introduction to the technique.  Some things to remember:

  • Controlling their posture is the most important thing. Don't let them arch their back.
  • Don't settle for crappy grips before falling to your hip. Secure the grip in the bicep
The Japanese Necktie is basically working from the same starting grip but then bringing the forearm behind the neck and putting your shoulder to the ground.  Not sure if I figured it out but I'll recognize it as an option.

Rolling: Half Guard (4 x 4 min)
Rolled With: Ken, Tyler

It's been a while since I rolled with Ken and he's still challenging.  His ability to explosively shrimp from anywhere.  I did do better against him than in my younger Jiu-Jitsu days though.

I felt a little bad for the size disparity between Tyler and I.  I did my best to try to use only technique but he's pretty skillful.  We talked about passing knee shield and we both have each other problems with it.

Office Hours Partner: Mo

Had some good bouts with Mo. He's becoming more like Mike in his guard passing.  He prevented my one legged x-guard entries and had some other fancy footwork to get around my legs. Oh I hope he doesn't figure out the leg drag.  I messed around with setting up some ankle locks.

October 13th 2015 - Gi Beginner

Theme & Techniques: O-Soto Gari, Basic Side Control Escape, Side Control Americana
Partner: Bhuvana

I believe that this is week 1 of the beginner curriculum if anyone is interested.  Here are some things that came up today for these techniques:
  • For O-Soto Gari step so you are hip to hip and time the hook movement with your step
  • For Side Control Escape drive your knee all the way to their other hip.  When kicking in the end to free your foot don't try to lift their leg off the floor push their leg back across the floor.
  • For the americana once I get the wrist to the floor I like to use my head to control their wrist until I can get my grips set.

Rolling: Side Control (4 x 2 min)
Rolled With: Robert, Ben

So I went through with attempting the techniques from class.  It was very difficult for my brain to adjust to not doing my usual responses to certain things.  I had a pretty tough time because both Robert and Ben aren't slouches.  Attempting the americana on Robert was difficult because if I let go of the crossface he was able to turn into me and start looking for the single or double leg.  I at least put the wrist to the floor but wasn't able to fully finish.

From the bottom I was able to at least get my knee in and regain half guard and butterfly.  The thing that I'm focusing on most is not telegraphing with my breathing before I bridge and it's getting better.

Office Hours Partner: Robert

Had 3 five minute rounds with Robert after class.  I tried to push myself to stay active throughout the time but did find myself stopping on the bottom of side control a few times.  I spent most of the time on the bottom and he was able to submit me near the end with a kimura.  I played some half guard and used some butterfly to regain.  He's so difficult to move and I often end up on the bottom during a scramble.

I'm glad that he's around because he's different than the other guys that are better than me.  Actually everyone that's better than or challenges me has something unique in their rolling style.  Greg, Conan, Jerad, Mike, Adam, Alejandro, Fuji, Henry, Zac, Robert all give me trouble in different ways.  If I didn't include you it's because we don't roll enough or you need to step up your game ;)

October 6th 2015 - Gi Beginner

Theme & Techniques: Head Lock Escape Over Head Roll, Straight Footlock and Defense
Partner: Ben

I was actually happy to see the straight footlock come up this week.  I recently trained with Mike A. on some no gi footlocks and decided that I want to spend some time improving them.  This week couldn't have come at a better time.

The things that I took note of today:
  • After opening the guard, grab the heel and push their foot forward until their toes are in your armpit.
  • Your elbow will kind of stick out with some space because you want the skinnier part of your arm against their achilles.
  • After you fall to your side you will then collapse your elbow underneath you, look to the floor, open your shoulder, and finally bridge.
I think the biggest improvement that I felt today was doing the kick to place the foot into the hip and then falling to the side.  I'm also focusing on keeping my thighs tight.

Rolling: Guard (4 x 2 min)
Rolled With: Robert, Brian G.

It was good to roll with Robert again, as it's been a while.  The thing that he's able to do to me more often than anyone else is find a way to stand up while I'm attempting to pass his guard.  It was even on my mind today and I tried to take the precautions to prevent it but he still did it.  From the bottom I held him at bay but wasn't able to sweep.  At one point I felt like I had him in a loop choke that was locked in, but he weathered the storm and eventually got free of it.

Office Hours Partner: Brian G, John

Rolling with Brian at the end of class and after was good.  He put me on my butt at one point with a scissor sweep but gave me enough space to come up and regain the top.  When he was attempting to pass there were a couple times when I felt like he was almost locking my legs down but I could just scrape by a little bit and get my knee free and regain guard.

John did a couple of good things that I didn't expect.  2 times when I was attempting to pass his half guard he was able to regain the underhook and turn the position around on me.  I'll have to think about if I'm leaving an opening there or if he's doing something extra to get that underhook.  I caught him a couple times with my modified butterfly sweep, that he was kind of surprised by.  I showed it to him after we finished rolling.

September 29th 2015 - Gi Beginner

Theme & Techniques: Basic Open Guard, Tripod Sweep
Partner: Bhuvana, Megan

Bhuvana brought a friend in to train today and she had a pretty good attitude for her first class.  Understandably a little hesitant but willing to try the stuff and take instructions.  I think it was a pretty good class to start with because we started with open guard and only did a couple other things from there.

Some things that I found work for me in open guard:
  • The leg on the bicep is your active leg.  Keep that hip off the floor so you can move that leg around anywhere you need it.
  • When learning this position, relax.  Know that you want to remain on your side and keep your hips in line with them.  When they move try to figure out how to reset the starting position
  • When coming up from the tripod sweep pull the pushing leg back so you can kneel on it.

Rolling: Basic Open Guard (4 x 2 min)
Rolled With: Greg, Josh M

Interesting roll with Greg.  My open guard didn't last too long when I was on bottom either time and I ended up in half guard or he was in knee up passing position.  I felt pretty good about the half guard time, I ended up using his lapel under his leg to try to work my way into deep half and keep him from passing.  It worked for a little while at least.  From the top I was really worried about getting triangled.  I attempted the belt grab and foot push pass but couldn't get free of his grips.  On our last roll we ended up in an interesting foot lock position where he played around with a calf cutter.

With Josh I was able to setup some loose omoplatas and move into cross guard.  When I was on top, Josh caught me in a triangle position near the end of our roll.  I was able to posture but he was still working for it until the time ran out.

Office Hours Partner: Josh

Greg had us work a bit on the twist sweep.  He pointed out that I was focusing too low with the sweep and should control their thigh instead.  Hopefully this is the detail I need because it's still not sinking in.  No one wanted to stay and roll with me though, bummer.

September 22nd 2015 - Gi Beginner

Theme & Techniques: Defend Guillotine from Guard, Ezekiel from Mount & Half Guard
Students: Bhuvana, Dave, Mo, Abdul, Ben, Morgan, Tom

Pulled out some different exercises for the warm-up today.  We did some partner shrimp walks where you push on your partners legs while they stand over you to assist with the shrimp.  Then front shrimps with a partner that I just remembered.  We did some back and forth takedown fitins, then some grip fighting from standing.

Some things I tried to focus on while teaching the techniques were:
  • In order to defend the guillotine from guard you have to get ahead of them and stay ahead.  Getting to your toes and pushing them flat on their back before they can pull you down and move to the side is going to be key.
  • After releasing the choke pull your arms back along with your head and try to get your posture back.  Unless you like being armbared.
  • For the Ezekiel I've been playing around with where to apply the choke.  I'm still not 100% that I have the best way, but I've had a lot of success with going across to the other side rather than just applying the choke to the near side.
  • From half guard, have the intention that you are going to pass to mount, make them take away their defense to block your knee to get a good shot at completing the choke.

Rolling: Closed Guard (2 x 2 min), Half Guard (2 x 2 min), Free Rolling (5 min)
Rolled With: Tom, Ben

With uneven partners I was able to roll a few times.  Rolling felt pretty smooth, always love starting in mount on the top, plus half guard!  Both Ben and Tom did a good job at defending.

During the free rolling round I did my best to give Abdul some pointers as he's only been to a couple of classes.  Most of my advice had to do with posture and preventing armbars and triangles from guard.  After class we talked about figuring out what the desired positions are and knowing when you're in trouble is what he needs to focus on first.

Office Hours Partner: Morgan

After rolling a couple times Morgan asked about how to go about passing guard from knees/butterfly.  I went over a couple passes that I like to do and discussed the grips I like to go for.  I've been working on dealing with avoiding the armdrag by kind of getting the grips and jumping the pass.

September 15th 2015 - Gi Beginner

Theme & Techniques: Koshi Guruma, Triangle from Closed Guard
Partner: Morgan

Worked on the Uchi Mata with Dave before class started.  Felt pretty good trying to generate the turn of the body that I wanted.  The step back and lift also felt good with the neck hip throw, I focused on trying to catch Morgan as he was coming up.

Triangle from guard is always one of those things that I know in theory but have a hard time completing in rolling.  During drilling I can choke someone and make it really tight, but always have a problem closing the triangle and controlling their posture during rolling and usually the omoplata is right there so I will abandon it for that.

Rolling: Guard Position (4 x 2 min), Free Rolling (4 min)
Rolled With: Morgan, Ben, Robert

Morgan was able to sweep me today as I defended his triangle attempt I became over extended and went to my back to claim some type of guard.  I probably should have gave him the triangle instead in the spirit of learning the technique that we practiced.  Ben did fine and stopped me from doing what I wanted to do a couple times.  However, with one of the sweeps I felt like he gave up a little too soon.  From the top I hit a few omoplata sweeps but it was interesting that I was getting my legs kind of tangled up afterward.  I think I just need to sink into side control faster rather than wait there.

Rolled lightly with Robert as he is cutting weight for a fight.  I ended up in turtle at one point and did a granby into triangle position.  He postured way back though and I didn't even get close to locking it up.  Otherwise we went back and forth position wise and it seemed pretty smooth rolling.

September 8th 2015 - Gi Beginner

Theme & Techniques: Head Lock Escape to Back Mount, Kneeling Guard Break to Knee Slide
Partner: Bhuvana

Pretty small class today with only 4 of us.  A few things that came up during class:
  • For the head lock escape digging the toes in and sending their head forward was the most difficult part.  This is a good skill to have though as it comes up with other techniques.
  • After breaking the guard open I think about grabbing the collar and twisting it like a bully grip bringing my elbow closed on my thigh creating a wall against their leg.
  • During the knee slide don't forget to grab the sleeve and pull it up to keep them from turning in.
Rolling: Closed Guard (4 x 2 min), Free Rolling (4 min)
Rolled With: Bhuvana, Morgan, Tom

I attempted to do 2 on 1 a couple times but everyone defended it well.  My cross guard was always in my back pocket and I used it a couple times.  From the top I was able to complete the guard break a few times but never was able to do a knee slide.  I ended up having to stand and go for toreando or go to over/under.

Office Hours: No One Wanted to Stay

I just went to youtube and watched some of my first tournament matches.  Holy crap was I shitty.  So much has changed since then and it turned out to be difficult to watch.  I don't move like that any more, I don't make those same mistakes or miss those opportunities.  Kind of cool to see but cringe-worthy at the same time.

September 1st 2015 - Gi Beginner

Theme & Techniques: Seoi Nage, Double Ankle Sweep, Butterfly Hook Sweep
Partner: Zac, Bhuvana

Had a rather large class today.  Some thoughts on the techniques for this week:
  • For the shoulder throw I've been working on different stepping and kind of pulling them into it.  Seems to help load them up onto the hips more.
  • Doing the "make a muscle" motion is very important
  • For the Double Ankle sweep the major thing I emphasized a couple times today was as you're getting up hipping forward on one side on top of their leg pinning it to the floor.  Keep your knee on the floor the entire time you move to mount.
  • For the Butterfly sweep I like to use the back hand to help me move under them as I shoot for the underhook.  Zac said this helped him lead with his hips instead of his hips to avoid the guillotine.

Rolling: Closed Guard (2 x 2 min), Butterfly (2 x 2 min), Free Rolling
Rolled With: Zac, Robert, Tom

Rolling felt great from the guard positions.  My cross guard is always in my back pocket.  From the top I've felt like breaking and passing the guard is very hard work.  Having to keep posture, monitor grips, have gravity against me, attempt to stand-up, then even if I break the guard I still have to figure out the best pass to attempt or deal with some type of open guard.  With butterfly I'm still trying to get the underhook squeeze and hang off my opponent perfected.  I was able to pull off a couple guard recovery tricks that Conan showed me the other day, in the vein of a granby roll.

In free rolling I was able to pull off the single leg x-guard setup to technical standup.  I'm still feeling stuck in mount sometimes unable to setup a submission.  I have my things but if people are keeping their defenses tight I'm kind of stuck, pushing and pulling on stuff hoping they'll make a mistake.  Tom told me I fooled him because previously I caught him with a couple NS chokes so when I was in north/south position he started worrying about the choke but I went for kimura instead.  This may be useful in the near future when everyone learns to defend my NS choke.

Rolled no-gi after class.  I started to feel pretty tired from lack of sleep and it was pretty hot in the gym.

Had a very tough roll with Robert.  I spent some time on top and got caught in his half guard.  I attacked a guillotine but couldn't connect my hands.  Eventually he swept me.  It was so slippery and while I thought I was defending the cross face from bottom half guard he was able to slip right through it.  At one point he caught me with a kimura as I attempted to go deep half and was even close to completing the sweep but he was able to isolate the arm.  I was pretty wiped out after this session.

August 25th 2015 - Gi Beginner

Theme & Techniques: Standing Guillotine Defense Against Wall to Neck Crank, Kneeling Guard Break, Double Under Pass
Partner: Robert, Morgan

Before class I had Zac help me with some Uchi Matas.  I decided to research this throw and see if it's for me.  The video at the bottom of this post has been pretty helpful so far.  I'm really interested in finding some more stand-up techniques because I often don't feel confident with my takedowns.

Not much to say about techniques this week.  Just want to point out that when defending the guillotine I like to think about scraping them up the wall and getting posture.  Bring your chest forward and up and don't use your neck to push against their arm.  Once you break the choke keep your posture because if you look down again they'll be able to pull you back down.

Rolling: Guard Position (4 x 2 min), Free Rolling (4 min)
Rolled With: Morgan, Greg, Robert

It feels like it's been a while since I trained in the closed guard and I enjoyed it.  Morgan did a good job from bottom with getting collar grips and attempting to break me down.  When I was on bottom I felt very comfortable and started playing my cross guard and 2 on 1.  I feel like I have a lot of options from here and maybe I should focus more on getting back to full guard.

Had an almost did something good with Greg situation.  I went to cross guard but he put a wall up and got my leg out of the space that I wanted.  He started to do a standing pass and somehow I ended up with a kimura grip.  I attempted to do the rotating back take technique but got stuck.  I went for half guard but I probably shouldn't have.  From the top Greg got me in 2 on 1 and eventually led into a triangle.

Office Hours Partner: Robert

Did the last roll with Robert and than another 5 minutes after class.  Like usual I ended up in half guard a lot.  I was able to use a butterfly hook a couple times to regain butterfly guard but he seems proficient in defending butterfly, maybe need to revisit that position soon.  I went to deep half a lot, but didn't feel confident in the position with him.  He seems to be able to beat it.  I ended up in side control at one point and was able to implement some of things that Conan worked with me on this past week.  Greg said he saw some pretty good stuff from both of us during our rolls.
